The Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation board of directors recently appointed Rachael Cunningham and Brian Hinton to three year terms on the Mattoon Area Community Foundation Advisory Board. 

Rachael CunninghamRachael Cunningham is an attorney with Brainard Law Office and focuses her practice on estate planning matters and real estate transactions.  She also serves as City Attorney for the City of Charleston.   Rachael graduated with honors from Purdue University, receiving both her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.  She then earned her law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law, where she graduated cum laude and served as an editor of the Elder Law Journal.   She makes her home in Charleston with her husband, Craig Cunningham, a fellow University of Illinois College of Law graduate and Financial Advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors.

Brian Hinton is a senior account manager at RR Donnelley in Mattoon, Illinois.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Greenville College and a Masters in Business Brian HintonAdministration from Millikin University.  Brian and his wife, Heather, have three children and have lived in Mattoon for 26 years.  He is a member of the Mattoon Rotary Club, Immaculate Conception Church and is a 3rd degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.  Brian is actively involved with the Mattoon Foundation for Academic Excellence and is a former board member of CUSD #2 Board of Education and Easter Seals East Central Illinois Chapter.

According to Scott Lensink, chair of the regional community foundation and member of the Mattoon Area Community Foundation advisory board, “We are pleased to have Brian and Rachael join the Mattoon Board.  The skills and background they bring to the table will be great assets to the local foundation.”

The Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation board of directors recently appointed James Hull and Bill Elliott to three year terms on the Mattoon Area Community Foundation Advisory Board. 

Jim HullJames R. Hull, Ph.D., is Vice President for Academic Services, Lake Land College in Mattoon, which includes responsibilities for all facets of education at the college.  Dr. Hull holds a Bachelor Degree in Marketing from SIUC, a Master of Business Administration from SIUE, and Ph.D. in Workforce Education and Development from SIUC.   He began his tenure with Lake Land College in July, 2008, after serving in a similar capacity at Rend Lake College in Ina, Illinois, where he served six years as Vice President for Instruction.  Dr. Hull has served the communities in which he has lived in various capacities throughout his career.  He has been very active in economic development activities as well as industrial retention and attraction.  Dr. Hull has also been actively involved with the Foundations of the community colleges at which he has served.

Bill Elliott is Assistant Dean of The Graduate School, Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.  Mr. Elliott has worked in higher Bill Elliotteducation for the past 17 years in administrative and teaching roles at EIU and Lake Land College.  In his current position, he is responsible for oversight of both graduate and international student admissions.  He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from EIU and has resided in Coles County for the past 25 years.

According to Scott Lensink, chair of the regional community foundation and a member of the Mattoon Area Community Foundation advisory board, “I am very pleased to welcome these individuals to MACF.  They are both active leaders involved in many projects in their local communities and their professional expertise and community knowledge will be a great asset to the local foundations.”

Sherri Branson and Diana Smith were also recognized for completing their service on the Mattoon Area Community Foundation advisory board.  “Sherri and Diana have done a great job of supporting the mission of the Mattoon Area Community Foundation and were actively involved in the organization’s growth to over $2 million in charitable assets,” Lensink added.

Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation was established in 1999 as a result of a partnership between the Mattoon Area Community Foundation (est. 1990) and the Effingham County Community Foundation (est. 1999).  Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation operates as a collection of permanent and non-permanent funds for the long-term benefit of Clark, Clay, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Effingham, Fayette, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland and Shelby counties.  Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation currently manages approximately $13.5 million in charitable assets for the greater good of Southeastern Illinois.

2012 Michael Alan Fuller II Memorial Scholarship Receipents PDF Print E-mail

The Michael Alan Fuller II Memorial Scholarship is one of several scholarships administered by the Mattoon Area Community Foundation.  The scholarship fund was established in memory of Alan Fuller who was killed in a single-car accident in 2004.  His family, Mike and Carol Fuller and Rachelle Fuller, organize the Big Al Golf Classic each year to raise money for the scholarship fund.

To qualify for the Michael Alan Fuller II Memorial Scholarship, applications must be a graduating senior of Mattoon High school and must be continuing his/her education in a college or university in full-time pursuit of an undergraduate degree.  Applicants are required to submit character references and write an essay about their character.

Zachary Myers will receive a  scholarship from National Distributor in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Alan Fuller lived and worked in Albuquerque for 7 years, one of the companies he worked for was National Distributor.  The company’s CEO, Caryl Cochran, started the Michael Alan Fuller II Memorial Scholarship Fund at the time of Alan's death.  Cochran, family and friends of Fuller donated to this fund at that time.  An additional scholarship is presented to a student in Albuquerque, New Mexico that is seeking career in the restaurant and beverage industry in addition to the scholarships awarded to the students graduating from Mattoon High School.


 
Grant proposals for Communityworks Endowment Fund requested PDF Print E-mail

The Mattoon Area Community Foundation is requesting proposals from nonprofit organizations from within Coles County on behalf of the Communityworks Endowment Fund. Applications for community improvement projects in the areas of workforce development, early childhood education and land use and protection must be submitted to the Mattoon Area Community Foundation before June 30.  

Following is a description of the field of interest of the Communityworks Endowment Fund.  Grants of up to $1,500 will be awarded for proposals that impact one or more of the following issues areas:

  • Workforce Development - To improve the economic health of the region so that residents earn sustainable, living wages and prosper. (example:  Job retention and career advancement; Job creation; Including entrepreneurial efforts; Access/transportation options to jobs).
  • Early Childhood Education and Child Care - To increase collaboration among educators and other stakeholders working to identify and address early care and education issues and community needs. (Example:  Increasing access to quality, Affordable childcare and early childhood education options for working families; Expanding availability of quality childcare facilities; Strengthening childcare education programs and management capacities.
  • Land Use and Protection - To partner and collaborate on projects related to the environment and land use in the region. (Protection and restoration of natural lands and waterways; Implementation of regional growth management and land use strategies that promote economic vitality and environmental health; Expansion/connection of preserved natural lands; Development of clean renewable energy and prevention of pollution; Education of the public in above issues.

The Communityworks Endowment Fund was established in 2004 as part of a special initiative between the Community Foundation and the Grand Victoria Foundation.  According to Scott Lensink, a Mattoon Area Community Foundation board member, “Through the generosity of the Grand Victoria Foundation and matching gifts from many area donors, this permanent endowment gives the Mattoon Area Community Foundation a flexible source for strategic grant making for generations to come.”

The deadline to submit a grant application is June 30, 2012.  Grant recipients are announced by September 1st.

2012 Arland D Williams Scholarship Applications Available PDF Print E-mail
The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship Committee and the Mattoon Area Community Foundation is pleased to announce that nomination forms for the 2012 award are available.  Scholarship nominees must be a senior or graduate student in good standing at the college level at the time of the award and be majoring in the field of finance, banking, accounting, economics or computer sciences.  The nominee must be a graduate of Mattoon Senior High School and exhibit high qualities of character to be worthy of the award.

The scholarship was created to honor the memory of the late Arland D. Williams, Jr.   Mr. Williams grew up in Mattoon and was a national hero of an airplane crash in Washington D.C. in 1982.  

The Arland D.Williams, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established in May 1983 by Mrs. Virginia Williams, mother of Arland D. Williams, Jr.  The original fund value was $10,100 in 1983.  Since 1985, 26 scholarships have been awarded for a total of over $58,000.  The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship Fund is managed by the Mattoon Area Community Foundation along with 12 other funds to benefit the community.  The 2011 recipient of the Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship was Stephen Eades.

Nomination forms can be found on the community foundation’s Website at www.enrichingourcommunity.org under “Mattoon Area” and “Scholarships.”  Nomination forms may also be obtained by contacting Joedy Hightower at the community foundation at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
