Effingham County Community Foundation board approves $44,100 in grants to be distributed to 15 Effingham County nonprofit organizations |

9/27/2011 Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation President and CEO, Joedy Hightower, announced the awards of $44,100 in grants from the Effingham County Community Foundation to fifteen Effingham County nonprofits at a grant reception held at the Fairfield Inn and Suites on Thursday, September 23, 2011.
Grants to these Effingham County nonprofits were awarded from six different funds. The awards were based on request proposals submitted in May of this year. Each fund requires recipients to meet certain guidelines and detail how they would use the grant monies.
Funds from the Bill and Jacquelyn Jordan Anderson Fund for Visual Arts were awarded to benefit the arts in Effingham County. Recipients of grants from this fund and their respective grant award include: Dieterich Community Civic Center ($300), Effingham Art Guild ($2,000), Effingham Artisan Fair ($1,200), and Dr. Charles M. Wright House NFP ($1,000).

The Bill and Jacquelyn Jordan Anderson Fund for Youth and the Effingham County Community Foundation Unrestricted Fund each contributed grants to benefit the youth of Effingham County. Recipients of grants from these two funds and their respective grant award include: CASA of Effingham County ($4,000), Mid-Illinois Big Brothers Big Sisters ($3,000).

Siemer Milling Funds were awarded to Effingham County 4-H Youth Ambassadors ($3,300) to support the development of young leaders, specifically the Prescription Pill and Drug Disposal program.

The Dr. Peter and Milla Kollinger Family Fund and the Effingham County Community Foundation Unrestricted Fund contributed grants to provide support to charitable organizations in the areas of medicine, public library or education. The recipient of these funds is Immanuel Lutheran Church’s after school program ($3,500).

Teutopolis State Bank Funds were awarded to CEFS Economic Opportunity Corporation ($800) to support projects that benefit the Teutopolis community, specifically to support the Teutopolis Park District programs.

The Effingham County Community Foundation Unrestricted Funds were awarded to benefit programs in three distinct areas: Workforce Development, Early Childhood Education and Child Care, and Land Use and Protection. Recipients of grants from this fund and their respective grant award include: Effingham Child Development Center ($7,000), Effingham Vision 2020 Education Spoke ($4,000), Trails Recreation Effingham County (TREC) ($3,000), Dieterich Community Civic Center ($4,000), Greater Effingham Chamber of Commerce & Industry BEST Center ($4,000), and ARC Community Support Systems ($3,000).

Veteran, Philanthropist Fondly Remembered For Legacy |

Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation President and CEO, Joedy Hightower, announced the death of Veteran and Philanthropist, Delbert Facklam. “Delbert Facklam was a great man compelled to generosity by his strong sense of roots and connectedness to where he always called home,” recalls Hightower.
Mr. Facklam initially established scholarship funds with the Community Foundation for students of Teutopolis High School. He went on to establish several designated funds to provide ongoing support for selected projects that had meaningful connections in his life. The designated funds include Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Shumway, IL, St. Paul’s Cemetery and St. Michael’s Parish in Sigel, IL and Stewardson Cemetery in Stewardson, IL.
Mr. Facklam lived most of his adult life in California. However, he never abandoned the regional area where he spent his earliest years. He was born in Stewardson, IL and moved to Sigel, Illinois in his teens. Facklam attended St. Michael’s School until his senior year, where he attended Teutopolis High School and graduated in 1939.
Following graduation Mr. Facklam enlisted in the U.S. Navy before World War II and was stationed at Farragut, Idaho. He served overseas during World War II and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1960. During his twenty years of serving our country, he was decorated with six gold stripes for his service.
“The ongoing legacy of Delbert Facklam will be reflected in the good works resulting from his academic scholarships and their future generosity to help preserve home,” adds Hightower. The Community Foundation oversees the funds established by Mr. Facklam to ensure their long-term sustainability and positive community impact.
Delbert Facklam passed away June 20, 2011. He will be buried at Arlington Cemetery.

1939 graduate and philanthropist visits Teutopolis High School |

12-2-2010 Mr. Delbert Facklam was an honored visitor at Teutopolis High School, Monday, November 22, 2010. He traveled from his home in Ukiah, California to visit friends and the high school he attended his senior year. Mr. Facklam is well known by the Teutopolis High School faculty members, students, and administration for his generosity in supporting education through his Delbert E. Facklam and Marydyl T. Hughes Facklam Scholarship. He created the scholarship in memory of the Teutopolis High School faculty and the classmates of the graduating class of 1939. Since 2005, seven THS seniors have benefited from his charitable gifts. He has contributed over $4600 to the advancement of students’ education. Recipients of his scholarships are THS students: 2005 – Renee Habing, 2006 – Allison Hotze, 2007 – Katie Sudkamp and Dillon Wallin, 2008 – Michael Henry, 2009 – Beth Kreke and 2010 – Jennifer Vogt. |

The CEO Class is off to Another Fast Start! |

09-15-2010 Twenty-five students from Effingham, St. Anthony, Beecher City, Altamont, Teutopolis, and Dieterich form the 2010-2011 CEO class, and instructor Craig Lindvahl feels that this will be an outstanding group of young business leaders. "This is a group comfortable with asking questions, comfortable with exploring new ideas, and they are excited about the learning we'll do together", Lindvahl said. "I'm sure they'll do things that will be amazing."
The class has already visited several area businesses, including the Prairie Training Centre, Uphill Grind, Burkland's Florist, and Hodgson's Mill. The class also has its first class business, providing identification badges for the CEO class and the Teutopolis/Effingham multimedia class, well underway. The class has also explored some of the basic fundamentals of business, including revenue, expense, cash flow, inventory management, working with suppliers, and wholesale/retail pricing. |
