Mattoon Civil War Memorial Ellipse Project Fund

The Mattoon Civil War Ellipse Program is a Historic Preservation Memorialization Initiative recognizing Mattoon’s Civil War context through the fusion of landscape design and sculpture. The Ellipse will feature The Last Sentry Monument (a monument of bronze and granite sculpted by Roy Butler of Las Vegas, Nevada) and will be located within the historic former boundaries of the Union Army’s Camp Grant (1861-1865). Committee Chair Steve Thompson believes that “the Ellipse project physically preserves and memorializes Mattoon’s Civil War heritage and through its execution will enhance the landscape features of the community.” Thompson is hopeful that this project “could be the catalyst for similar heritage projects throughout the region.” The steering committee for the project has reached an agreement with the Mattoon Area Community Foundation to act as the not-for-profit 501(c)(3) fiscal agent for the Ellipse Project.
