Applications availble for $2,500 Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship

Mattoon Area Community Foundation and the Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship committee are pleased to announce that the application for the 2016 award is now available online. 

Qualifying applicants must be a graduate of Mattoon Senior High School, exhibit high qualities of character and must be a college junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing at the time of the award. Applications must be majoring in the fields of finance, banking, accounting, economics or computer sciences in order for consideration.

The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship application is only available online and the scholarship committee will no longer accept paper applications.

To apply, visit ww.enrichingourcommunity.org/ADWilliams. The deadline for applications and letters of reference is May 15, 2016 by 11:59 p.m. No incomplete or late applications will be considered after the deadline.

The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship honors the memory of the late Arland D. Williams, Jr. who graduated from Mattoon High School. Mr. Williams became a well-known example of extraordinary heroism when his actions saved fivepeople after a 1982 airplane crash in Washington D.C. His selfless actions cost him his life but his heroism lives on.

The scholarship fund was established in May 1983 by Mrs. Virginia Williams, mother of Arland D. Williams, Jr. Since 1985, 31 scholarships have been awarded totaling over $67,000.
